Transmission fluid serves a number of crucial roles, such as providing lubrication, cooling, and the pressure necessary to successfully engage gears. So if your vehicle has a transmission fluid leak, you’ll want to address it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you could soon end up with major transmission trouble that is highly expensive to resolve. At SM Transmissions, we provide expert transmission fluid leak repair in the greater Irving, TX area. Here’s a look at four common sources of transmission fluid leaks. Worn Seals and Gaskets Seals and gaskets in the transmission system can degrade due to heat, pressure, and regular wear and tear. When these components become damaged or worn out, they may develop cracks or gaps, leading to fluid leaks. Common areas where seals and gaskets can fail include the transmission pan and input and output shafts. Loose or Damaged Transmission Pan The transmission pan is responsible for holding the transmission fluid in place. If the bolts securing the pan to the transmission housing become loose or damaged, it can result in fluid seepage. Also, the pan itself can develop cracks or holes, especially if it gets impacted by road debris. Damaged Transmission Fluid Lines Transmission fluid lines do the important job of carrying fluid through different components in the transmission system. These lines may become damaged due to corrosion or other reasons. It’s important to periodically check transmission fluid lines for signs of wear or damage so that they can be addressed before fluid loss causes major transmission damage. Faulty Transmission Pan Gasket The gasket that seals the transmission pan to the transmission housing can eventually deteriorate, leading to fluid leaks. If the gasket becomes brittle or develops tears or cracks, it can no longer effectively prevent fluid from escaping. Replacing the transmission pan gasket during routine maintenance intervals can help prevent leaks from occurring.
