If you drive a manual transmission, it’s important to be familiar with signs of clutch trouble so you know to visit the mechanic ASAP when something seems off. By being proactive about getting to the shop, you’ll have the best chance to address the issue before it worsens and causes bigger trouble. At SM Transmissions, we provide expert clutch repair in the greater Irving, TX area.

Warning Signs of Clutch Trouble

Oftentimes, issues with the clutch pedal will make it clear that a clutch problem is present. If your clutch pedal is sticking, then you could have an issue with the linkage or release bearing. The stickiness of the clutch pedal could occur due to the springs in the linkage becoming overstretched.

If your clutch pedal has become very noisy as it goes up and down, then there could be a clutch fork problem. The clutch fork is central to the proper engagement and disengagement of your clutch, so issues with it should be promptly addressed.

If your clutch pedal feels loose or spongy, then there may be a problem related to the clutch fork or release bearing. A spongy/loose clutch pedal could also be occurring because of a leaking hose/pipe, or low fluid in the reservoir.

With a vibrating clutch pedal, you may be dealing with a worn-out flywheel, pilot bearing, or clutch disc lining. The clutch pedal can start to vibrate when the clutch disc fails to maintain a strong grip on the flywheel.

There are also a couple other issues to watch out for that suggest clutch trouble. For one, grinding could occur if a clutch disc doesn’t properly disengage while shifting. Grinding may also result from problems with the pressure plate or throw-out bearing. And if you can’t get your car to go into or out of third gear, then there’s reason to suspect clutch plate damage or linkage failure. Also, a burning smell could mean that your clutch is overheating because of a worn-out clutch plate.
