Symptoms of Clutch Trouble We Can Fix at Our Irving Transmission Shop

SM Transmissions • 14 September 2022

While most clutches are designed to hold up for at least 60,000 miles, the point at which a clutch needs to be replaced can range from 30,000 to over 100,000 miles. And there are certain signs of clutch trouble that mean you should get to the shop ASAP to hopefully prevent the problem from escalating and becoming more costly to address. At SM Transmissions, our local transmission shop specializes in clutch repair in the greater Irving, TX area.

Warning Signs of Clutch Failure

Symptoms of clutch trouble often become apparent due to issues with the clutch pedal. If your clutch pedal makes a lot of noise when you step on it or release it, then you could have a failing clutch fork. For your clutch to correctly engage and disengage, the clutch fork needs to be healthy, so it’s important to take care of clutch fork issues ASAP. You may also have a clutch fork problem if your clutch pedal feels spongy or loose. However, a spongy clutch pedal could also be caused by low fluid or a leaky hose/pipe.

With a sticky clutch pedal, you could be dealing with a faulty release bearing or malfunctioning linkage. If the linkage springs become overstretched, then the clutch pedal could become sticky.

If your clutch pedal is significantly vibrating, then you could have a failing pilot bearing or flywheel, or your clutch disc lining may be worn out. When the clutch disc can’t properly grip the flywheel, the clutch pedal is liable to start vibrating.

Aside from clutch pedal issues, there are a couple of other common signs of clutch failure to watch out for one. Grinding is one such sign, and may occur because of a clutch disc that doesn’t correctly disengage during the shifting process. Also, if you notice a burning smell, it’ll be worth having the mechanic take a look.
